Across the White Plains to the South Pole

This is the historic account of the first All Women’s Expedition navigating 700 miles/1500 km across the frozen white landscape of Antarctica to reach the South Pole 14 Jan 1993 . As the youngest team member on this life defining expedition Sunniva shares what it means to embark on an expedition. How to plan, and what in the world “Expedition Behaviour“ means and how it relates to teams, respecting diversity and problem solving.

As Co-Founder of Hearts in the Ice a cornerstone value has been involvement in citizen science projects providing a rich platform for sharing how observation and  community engagement with youth in environmental conservation are necessary. Sunniva shares inspiring examples of citizen science initiatives, projects that Hearts in the Ice contributed to highlighting the power of collective action, and offers practical guidance on how individuals and communities can get involved and why two-eyed seeing (western science/indigenous science) is imperative to understanding our way forward.

Hearts in the Ice - Poles Apart with one mission to engage!

The historic account of the 19-month expedition that Sunniva Sorby, Hilde Fålun Strøm and Ettra (their 4 year old malamute), completed in Svalbard Norway. They became the first women in history to overwinter in the high Arctic of Svalbard solo without men. They served as active Citizen Scientists for 9 International science projects earning them the title “Extreme Rocket Citizen Scientists” from NASA after recording a timelapse of a rocket launch with Barium gases.They connected with over 100k youth globally to engage, educate and inspire active engagement around Climate Change.

Violet: A Polar Bear Story

The team of Hearts in the Ice followed “Violet” for 19 months in Svalbard. This was as extra-ordinary opportunity given the fact that the scientists travel was restricted due to Covid and bad weather.

Through the lens of this heartwarming 14-min documentary, students & adults will learn how they can become engaged citizen scientists, helping to collect data that influences global climate research.

Violet’s story isn’t just hers—it is a love letter from the Arctic, asking us to pay attention.
